How Soon Is Too Soon?

Parents usually begin teaching their children how to read and write before they can talk. But how early is too early to begin teaching your kids not only the basics of computer abilities, but computer programming, also?

Well, a few experts are saying that even five year olds can grasp the basics of computer tasks. At five, a child’s brain is mature enough to understand games and simple computer operations which usually is a fundamental pathway into other useful computer skills. Cisco SFP modules and spread sheets might not yet be within their grasp, but at this stage, the idea is to have fun while learning.

After kids hit age seven or so, or once they have started grade school, you can then begin to incorporate more advanced programs for your child. The best way to get a head start for your child is checking what classes are given at your local community center or library that are tailored to kids.

Most of these workshops use the time-tested approach of fun, colourful games to get kids into the process of learning. It is much easier for a child’s developing brain to grasp new ideas than it is for the brain of someone in their thirties who already has set standard neural pathways.

At age nine many kids are now advanced enough to understand complex binary numerical codes which, even though they are technically not computer languages, do assist in many programs. Once kids are showing this sort of progress, they then are able to decipher all sorts of computer related stuff like XFP modules and optical transceivers and their usages and differences, as well as the applications of optical fiber base designs.
